Off-the-beaten Path: Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, SD

This isolated and off-the-beaten path wild horse sanctuary is located in the southwestern part of South Dakota’s Black Hills country. In fact it’s so isolated it’s about 80 miles west as the crow flies from the North American continental Pole of Inaccessibility.

Driving through the Black Hills I came across this sanctuary and got to spend some time marveling at the wild horses, living free and running wild at this 11,000 acre sanctuary. The Sanctuary is dedicated to the preservation of endangered wild horse bloodlines including the Spanish, Choctaw Indian, Curly and American Mustangs.

To see these wild horses run free is an amazing sight, and one I didn’t want to leave behind … just like Rolling Stones sing, “Wild, wild horses Couldn’t drag me away.

  1. I am very happy that First Nations people are taking care of wild horses and not allowing them to be butchered.
    Thanks
