Myakka River – A Florida Jewel
Myakka River State Park is one of my favorite places. Situated approximately 30 miles east of Sarasota and one of the largest state parks in Florida, Myakka offers a lot: camping, hiking, birding, fishing, canoeing and wildlife viewing opportunities from wild boar to alligators.
Most of the park is also considered off the grid with no cell service. In fact the area just outside the park, but part of the Myakka system was where they searched for and later found the body of Brian Laundrie, boyfriend / killer of murdered travel blogger Gabby Petito.
But aside from that, the area is a great outdoors experience that I have enjoyed for more than n 20 years with my family as well as on solo hikes.
It’s a piece of Old Florida that is fast disappearing.
