Tarpon Fishing Addiction

Hi, my name is Alec and I’m addicted to tarpon. And bonefish. but today let’s talk about tarpon fishing addiction. It’s a serious condition that causes people to throw money at guides, gear and in the ocean in pursuit of the Silver Kings.

I have tarpon fishing gear from fly rod outfits (10 wt) to spinning gear, tarpon hats, tarpon shirts and even tarpon coffee mugs!

Now I have spent many thousands of dollars chasing tarpon throughout the Florida Keys from Islamorada to Marathon, in Miami from from Key Biscayne to the southern points of Biscayne Bay National Park and in Everglades National Park. I have timed trips to coincide with different moon phases and tides. Thankfully, I have been fortunate to catch them. But not every time.

Not every trip you even see them, let alone hook and land them. And when you do, there’a a good chance of them throwing the hook when they jump or any other gear malfunction when fighting 150 pound -plus fish for more than 30 minutes to an hour.

But it’s the hunt, chase and fight that brings me back every spring and fall to chase tarpon knowing the outcome can be disappointing with no fish or a punishing fight that makes every muscle sore and wishing for a moment I had a different hobby (or addiction).
