Fishing in the Pecos Mountains in New Mexico

Fly Fishing in the desert? No way!

that’s what I though when I was planning my trip to New Mexico. A little bit of research proved there is great trout fishing in New Mexico, especially the area where I was headed, Santa Fe.

I spent a full day fishing with a local Orvis endorsed guide and fly shop Land of Enchantment Guide. As this was early May, the spring run-off was very swift and strong and made fishing the Pecos and Holy Ghosty rivers high in the Pecos Mountains of Santa Fe National Forest difficult and technical.

After a couple hours and one small brown trout later, we went to fish a high alpine lake at 8,500 foot elevation.

At this lake located on a private ranch I caught 4 or 5 decent sized rainbow trout to close out my trip to New Mexico and the 50th state visited!
