Visiting Big Cypress Swamp in the Dry Season

Swamps like the Big Cypress Preserve have two seasons, wet and dry. During the dry season (November – May/) more of the swamp and backcountry opens up due to the receding waters .

This also forces a lot of the wildlife, alligators, wading birds, turtles, fish, deer, panthers and snakes to congregate where the water is, namely solution holes, deeper sloughs and canals.

on a recent drive on Big Cypress Loop Road (mostly unpaved off Tamiami Trail) we came across many dozens of gators, hundreds of birds ad other wildlife along the road and trails.
